— Shanique Francis

In the year 2012, divorce is glamorized and can be described as the “I can’t believe it’s not butter” to marriage’s toast.

When you get married, it is expected that it will not work out, that you will fall out of love or someone will cheat.

As a single person, why would I want to get married? Why would I want to put myself or my future children through that?

What’s worse is that divorce is also sneaking into our churches as well. Instead of going on our knees or trying to help our brothers and sisters, we gossip and judge them about the separation.

We go as far as to quote scriptures, “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery” (Luke 16:18), which does more damage.

So what do we singles do with failed marriages all around us? Don’t become a “matrimonophobic,” get into some biblical love.

Yea! Never heard of it, huh? Don’t you know the song “You give good biblical love baby…so good take this heart of mine….” by Whitney Houston? Just kidding. Biblical love is as the name refers to love in the bible. Many of us Christians forget, but the bible is filled with “supercouples”.

The first super couple ever was Adam and Eve; they were like the “Cory and Topanga” (“Boy Meets World”) of the bible. For these two, they were perfect for each other, like there was not another option for Adam after he saw Eve.

They endured a lot. They got kicked out of the Garden of Eden and their son was murdered by his brother, but they stuck it out and lasted until their ends.

The “Ross and Rachel” (“Friends”) of the bible were Abraham and Sarah; they had a lot of ups and downs but got a great reward in the end. These two, loved each other, suffered Sarah being barren together, worshipped and had faith in God together. Do you notice the trend in the B.C. (Before Christ) era?

The words “they, their and together” signify more than one, a union and their inclusion of God in the mix. I strongly believe that is why our marriages are failing today: God is being left on the outside.

The super couples of biblical love are the examples we, singles, should look at, not J.Lo and Marc or Kim and Kris. Yes, we can say that the marriages of today go through a lot more hardships and challenges and we cannot dare compare both eras.

But think about it this way, if we put God in the center of our marriages and remember that bible says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), we should have no reason to fear, right?

Let’s not give up hope, buy into marriages that don’t work, or become “matrimonophobic”. Wait on God. Make a pact with your future spouse to keep God in the center of your union, and you shall be happy together forever and ever amen. Besides, don’t you want a cute super couple name as well? I do! I do! I’m just saying!

I don’t know about you, but as a kid I loved being rewarded for finishing my chores, getting good grades and making the Honor Roll.

I was rewarded in many different ways: I was given money for bringing home A’s and B’s, received my favorite dessert, and allowed to go skating on the weekends.

Now on the other hand, when I was disobedient, I only received two things: A butt whooping or I was put on punishment. Now how many of you remember those days?

As I got older, things changed and the rewards were more difficult for me to earn. The reasons were 1.) I was a teenager 2.) I wanted to be “grown” or act like an adult. When I became a teenager, there was peer pressure, especially going into high school.

So as time went on and years went by, I would always try to remember this statement my dad would say to me, “Stay in line for your blessings,” when my parents gave me instructions or rules to obey. Now in my mind, I’m wondering, “What does that mean?” I finally figured it out as I began to study God’s word for myself and God revealed it to me.

Obedience leads to Honor - (Ephesians 6:1-3)

By obeying and honoring God, He makes room for you to receive God’s promises in His Word.

Obeying leads to Joy – (John 15:10-11)

It gives great joy for your parents and God to see that you are accomplishing the mission He has called you to fulfill. God loves to see that you are fulfilling your purpose in life.

When you give Him complete control of your life and walk in His ways and obey Him, you will experience God’s best and live the GOOD LIFE, the life the Lord has already prearranged for you to live!

— Lisa Crump

I recall certain times in my life when everything was completely falling apart. I felt like there was no way out of certain circumstances.

I also remember crying out to God, attempting to figure out why it was happening, and trying my best to pretend like I didn’t already know.

I learned from experience that there is no fooling God.

He knows our hearts, and he sees our future before we even attempt to act. There is no way you can live in disfavor and expect abundant blessings. And the majority time, as Christians, we know what it is that has our life in disarray. Our problem is usually finding the willpower and faith to break down the strongholds that prevent us from receiving God’s favor.

The best time to seek out God for strength is when we’re dealing with a bad habit or stronghold that God is displeased with. Proverbs 24:16 states: “For a righteous man falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in the time of calamity”.

There is no failure in God. You can go to him and talk to him as you would a friend and can be assured that there will never be judgment. Make sure to quiet yourself down and spend plenty of time in spiritual meditation by reading God’s word and opening yourself up to receive his answers to your questions.

You must be bold enough in your faith to distance yourself from whatever stronghold is holding you down. It could be a man or a job anything that forces you to dwell and focus on it more than God. We do have to recognize that some people and aspects of our lives are only meant to be there for a season, to teach us a lesson so that we may progress to the next level of life.

We have to ask God for the spirit of discernment so that we can be sure of what we need to leave behind when we are approaching our next season. Holding on to someone or something when you know God doesn’t want you to will cause you a life of misery and strife until you can let it go and receive your blessings.

Draw nearer to your children. What better way to get your mind off of certain bad habits than by devoting your time towards them. Bad habits and strongholds can cloud our minds to the point where they completely take over our very being.

If your mind is on something that you shouldn’t be doing, then you’re not putting much focus and effort into the things that you should be. I encourage you to seek freedom from bondage for your sake and for the sake of your children.

When you don’t have favor it’s a domino effect: whatever affects you, affects your children as well. God doesn’t bless mess, so in order to get to the point where we can truly be blessed, we must rid ourselves of anything that displeases him.

— LaLa G.

A few months ago I met a wonderful man and we decided to change our social network statuses from “single” to “in a relationship”.

Having been a serial dater for a number of years, it was the first time I ever changed my status.

I must admit, it is wonderful to have a physical reminder of this change. For me it represented growth. A year ago, I prayed to God to “hook me up” with someone special and He did!

What a better way to honor our relationship and share your testimony than to make a public announcement!

In my singleness, I enjoyed myself immensely! I attended gallery openings, meet ups, mixers, networking events, galas, cooking classes, you name it! My friends on my social network got a chance to experience my experiences through the photos I uploaded.

So when I changed my status, I began to think, must I relinquish my individuality for the sake of a relationship? The answer is a resounding “No”.

To be single is to “be unique, separate, complete and whole”.You must understand your significant other fell in love with you because of what made you unique, complete and whole. Your individual characteristics should continually be developing because it is what makes you a separate, special individual.

Therefore, being in a relationship does not mean you should lose yourself in the other person. Your union with your significant other should nurture your development so you both can collectively be better people in the world.

So yes, you are a creature like no other! You are special! You are whole! You are complete and this is what separates you from everyone else on the planet before you and after you!

As a Christian everyday God continues to mold you into a wonderful woman/man (Isaiah 64:8)! This will never change no matter what your social network status may be!

“Some women are not meant to be tamed. Maybe they are meant to run wild until they find someone just as wild to run with them” –Sex and the City
